A Fortress build to protect the country against Sweden. One of the most visited tourist spot in Norway.

Old giant Threes are planted around the City, as to protect the Town from bullets. Parts of the original fortress, moats and threes were destroyed by the government (Riksantikvaren) in the 90s. and replaced by a more beautiful Park. Massive protests from environmental groups, intellectuals and locals stopped the vandalism. Gamlebyen is still the best preserved fortified town in Northern Europe.
